Originally drafted by the Cats in 2011 with pick 32, Hamling didn’t make his AFL debut until he moved to the Bulldogs in 2015. Joel Hamling played 42 games for the Western Bulldogs across two seasons, from 2015 to 2016. One of the defining moments of his career at the Bulldogs came in the 2016 AFL Grand Final, where he played a pivotal role in the team’s historic premiership win.
His standout defensive performance, especially in his one-on-one battles with Sydney’s forwards, was crucial in securing the Bulldogs’ first premiership in 62 years. Throughout his time at the club, Hamling quickly established himself as a key defender, renowned for his composure under pressure, exceptional positioning, and ability to read the game.
We are excited to watch Joel continue to evolve and make his mark in the AFL as he heads into the 2025 season. Renowned for his composure under pressure, strong one-on-one defensive skills, and sharp game awareness, Hamling is set to have a major influence on Sydney’s backline in 2025. His leadership and defensive expertise are sure to stand out, bringing both stability and experience to the team. We look forward to seeing him shine in what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
