Rory Lobb was selected by the Greater Western Sydney Giants (GWS) with the 29th overall pick in the 2013 AFL Draft. A late-blooming talent, Lobb had only a few years of competitive football under his belt before being drafted. With a strong background in basketball and other sports, his athleticism and versatility made the transition to AFL relatively smooth. Lobb made his AFL debut for GWS in 2014, and his early years were focused on honing his skills. Quickly, he established himself as a tall forward with excellent marking ability and an impressive work ethic. In 2023, Lobb made another career move, this time to the Western Bulldogs. His acquisition was seen as a crucial step in strengthening the Bulldogs’ forward line and ruck depth, particularly following their 2021 Grand Final loss. However, in a surprising and exciting turn of events, Lobb has excelled in a new role—now playing as a key defender. Since transitioning to defense, Lobb has truly flourished. His marking ability, athleticism, and height have allowed him to dominate in this new position, providing the Bulldogs with a much-needed presence in their backline. His versatility, combined with his natural athleticism, has made him a key pillar in the Bulldogs’ defense, and he now looks like a seasoned defender, as if he has played down back his entire career.
